It is the long-term aim of the Craft & Design Department to contribute towards the personal development of the young person as a whole.  The intention is that the courses on offer will assist in raising the aspirations and self-esteem of the student while at the same time teaching patience and perseverance.  This will be achieved by introducing pupils to, and eventually further developing, practical skills in the workshop and by giving them the opportunity to follow a number of SQA courses.  While the department will endeavour to foster awareness of the importance of technology in modern society, it will be stressed that this should not lead to the abandonment of, or a reduction in the respect accorded to, traditional workshop skills.

  • Evaluation of existing skills and experience, if any, on arrival
  • Introduction to and practice in the use of  measuring and marking tools
  • Introduction to and practice in the use of cutting tools
  • Introduction to and practice in the use of driving tools
  • Introduction to and practice in the use of boring and drilling tools
  • Introduction to the common methods of joining and jointing timber

All of the above to be achieved through practical exercises and the manufacture of small artefacts.  At all times and at every opportunity the importance of safe working practices should be emphasised to all pupils.
